So recently I’ve been researching Digital SLR cameras, trying to decide which company was the superior maker, Canon or Nikon? After speaking with several professional photographers, I have come to this conclusion: they both are. For the higher end camera bodies, one photographer said Canon is best, still another swears by Nikon. For someone just getting into the D-SLR scene, it seems that Nikon might be the best choice, but Canon is probably the most popular. I asked a salesman at a very reputable local shop, which company has better lenses? “Nikon is known for their glass. Canon is too.” Go figure.

After quite a bit of looking online and talking to people, I purchased the Nikon D60. But, I have ten days to return it. Weigh in on the topic and comment below: what do you have, Nikon or Canon? Which model do you recommend, and why?

I to have recently looked at purchasing a D-SLR and have come to the same conclusion after talking to several pros. They are both great brands…

So is Kodak out of the question? :) I don’t think there’s a solid answer to this question. It’s a field where any company can produce the same thing as another, and that’s what Cannon and Nikon do. It’s just a brand loyalty question.

So, just a brand preference then. It may be as simple as that. However, you also have to look at the ergonomics of the camera body, the placement of controls and features, not to mention the quality of the materials used in production of the camera; all of which relate to the usability of the product, as opposed to merely the output of the product.

Although at the end of the day, I suppose it’s still a preference.

  4. I have a Canon 40D with a 24-70 2.8L and 70-200 2.8. Both of my lenses are L lenses which are some of the best lenses you can have. Lenses are one of the most important reasons to buy a particular brand. Frankly only Canon or Nikon are worth you time because they make some of the best glass in the world. These companies make glass for other reasons and they put their research and product into there lenses. Both have amazing glass and features.

I like Nikon because the flash system seems to be a tad bit more functional and convenient. Once you leave the default flashes for each company they fair about the same. I also like nikon because they seem to have a button for just about everything while canon has more function in the menus.

I like and use Canon because I use to work for Ritz/Wolf Camera and got attached while the world was still using film. Canon is the larger company and they, last I knew, put 2 million dollars plus per day into their r&d. Canon also makes faster lenses, some being as fast as 1.2 aperture. Canon also is the first one to shoot 1080i HD video in their full frame 5D Mark II (http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=2426&productID=249&articleTypeID=225). This is the first time video has been produced with super fast lenses such as the 85mm 1.2L ($1,800 ish). http://www.the-digital-picture.com/ is a great review site for anyone interested in Canon.

I have often though about picking up a Nikon body and some lenses and using both for the best of both world, but now I have over 8 thousand invested into Canon. Buy a few grand worth of lenses in one brand and it will be hard to use those kit lenses in the other.
